Explanation:
Even when a customer’s card appears to be valid, several technical or policy-related factors may cause Clearpay transactions to fail at the time of payment.
Please refer to the Action section to further understand and resolve the challenge.
Actions:
Please review and follow the various reasons and solutions below:
1. Card Type Not Supported by Clearpay
Clearpay may not support all types of cards. For instance:
- Prepaid cards or virtual cards are often declined.
- We do not accept foreign issued cards for overseas banks or cards issued by Buy Now Pay Later providers such as Zip Card or Humm card.
Solution: Switch to a supported Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card.
2. Insufficient Available Funds
Clearpay performs a pre-authorisation to validate funds before approving a transaction. If the card has insufficient available funds, even if it's otherwise valid, the payment will fail.
Solution: Inform customers that they should have at least 25% of the order total available in their account.
3. Mismatched Billing Details
If the billing address entered doesn't match what the card issuer has on file, the transaction may fail verification and be declined.
Solution: Prompt customers to double-check their billing address.
4. Order Declined by Clearpay
Clearpay may decline an order even if the payment method is valid. This decision is based on internal risk checks and spending behaviour patterns (e.g., too many recent purchases, outstanding payments, or unusual activity).
Solution: Inform customers that orders can occasionally be declined by Clearpay, even if everything seems in order. Encourage them to try the purchase again later or refer them to our Help Centre for more details: Why is my order being declined?
6. Purchase Limit/Available to Spend Amount Exceeded
Customers may be trying to make a purchase that exceeds their Clearpay limit or available to spend amount—even if the card is valid.
Solution: Advise customers to try a smaller amount or log into their Clearpay account to view their available limit.
